Situated at Aberdare [map link], Chequers Youth Facility has become a focal point
for the young people of the area. It offers a place to go which is both attractive
and safe. Aimed at those who may otherwise be drawn into anti-social and personally
damaging behaviour, by helping and educating them through their leisure time activities.
We provide training to develop personal and social skills. The advice, information,
guidance and counselling service enables young people to resolve problems and increase
their ability to seek out information. We have established the main aim of youth
work and informed others outside the service of these purposes and that is to promote
equal opportunities, to support young people in the transition into adulthood, to
assist them to develop attitudes and skills which enable them to make purposeful
use of their personal resources and time.
At present Chequers Youth Facility is open from Monday to Friday, from 10.00 am to
9.30 pm. It employs three full-time staff and five part-time staff: Project Development
Co-ordinator; Trainer; Tutor; two Outreach/Project Workers; two Supervisors and a
Domestic Cleaner. The Project Development Co-ordinator and the Trainer jointly manage
chequers Youth Facility. The Project Development Co-ordinator is responsible for
the operational aspects of the organisation from fund-raising to service development.
The Trainer is responsible for all aspects of staff management from training to supervision.
Chequers Youth Facility is also contracted to work with eight volunteers and is also
committed to providing practise placements for a number of higher education courses
and people in need of work placement organisations.
Always plenty to do including: Pool, Table Tennis, Darts, Weights Room and involvement
in competitions. For the young people it is a place to "chill out".
